I said: the sea. I pointed to the little suitcase where I had packed my razor and a change of clothing. She understood and put her things on top of mine: a dress—the one I’d brought back from Álvaro’s; a sweater from the wardrobe, too big and a bit scratchy, but which would keep her warm; a plastic bag for her toiletries.

After milking with Ramón, coffee, and a shower, I put the suitcase in the car. Once I closed the trunk, I couldn’t help but give him some instructions.

“If the calf is still sick tomorrow, call the vet, and have him vaccinate the others at the same time.”

“Are you going to get the hell out of here, or not? If you want to stay for your animals, just say so, and I’ll go with her!”

She was waiting politely by the car. I opened the door for her to get in, and made a little gesture for her to sit down: something that always worked with women, I liked making it. With her it was even better, her eyes filled with tears from the emotion and her upper lip began to tremble. I looked in the rearview mirror for a long time, watching Ramón waving his arms to say goodbye, with his checked handkerchief. I think he was laughing, the old fox, and his cigarette was pointing upward, practically in his eye.
